"Block bins is the best composting service I have used. I love that I can drop my compost off whenever works for me and dont need to worry about setting a bucket out once a month. Plus, it is easily the most cost effective option for me and I only have to walk a block to drop off my compost. Highly recommend!"

"I've been a Block Bins subscriber for a few years and I absolutely love it! With Block Bins, I can compost almost all my food waste and feel better about my impact on the planet. I chose Block Bins over another city service because it supports the Chicago community, is a little cheaper than its competitors, and I like that the compost pickup isn't door to door, making fewer stops and therefore, less of an impact on the planet there, too. If you're considering it, do it! If you can pay for Netflix, you can pay to compost. You won't regret it!"

"Block Bins is by far one of the best services I pay for. I've had this service since 2019 and I almost get annoyed at the thought of not having it. Being able to take out the compost the same way as trash but in its own bin feels so perfectly ordinary and really sets them apart from other services in the composting industry. Pickup is routine and eventless, as it should be, and any delays of disruptions in service are handled excellently by the Block Bins team. Their online portal keeps getting more flexible, helpful, and insightful, and I look forward to seeing this service continue to spread and mature :)"

Why else should you join Block Bins?
Our team regularly empties and power washes your Block Bin. Pickups occur every two weeks, and in winter low-volume bins are picked up every four weeks. Contact us if you need more frequent pickups.

What can we recycle?
Block Bins are dedicated-stream recycling bins. By collecting one material per bin, we enable better recycling options.
Request Block Bins for available and upcoming materials, or contact us to add the recycling services your community needs.
Compostables
Composting food scrap reduces the amount of waste that goes to landfills and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Where do we take compostables?
Our food scrap is composted in an anaerobic digester facility in Chicago IL, which produces renewable energy and fertilizer.
Plastics
We are taking the confusion out of plastic recycling. We can accept any type of plastic (#1-7) that is clean and dry.
Where do we take plastics?
We take plastics to Brightmark, a state-of-the-art plastics renewal facility in Indiana, where it is converted into diesel and raw material for new plastic products.
Electronics
Electronics are a major waste stream that can be inconvenient to dispose of. We make it easy to find a place to recycle your electronics.
Where do we take electronics?
We partner with local electronics recycling facilities to ensure that your electronics are recycled responsibly.
Boxes
Our dedicated box bins allow boxes to be reused instead of recycled, which saves a significant amount of energy and reduces deforestation.
Where do we take boxes?
We partner with cardboard box resellers so they can be used again. We are also investigating ways to get Amazon and large shippers that use cardboard boxes to reclaim and reuse them.
Shipping Materials
Shipping materials can easily be reused instead of disposed of or recycled.
Where do we take shipping materials?
We find local businesses who can accept shipping materials for reuse.
